Weaving With Horse Hair

Horse tail hair bundles mostly come from a nomadic band of Himalayan mountain horses known for their sure footedness and stamina.

The tails are anywhere from 24 inches to 36 inches long. When weaving a wave or vessel, I start with a bunch of tail hair about a finger width thick.

As I stitch/coil with waxed thread; I weave small amounts of longer hair into the piece to create the illusion of one, long, continuous coil.  It is patient work!

The craft of coiling is done in indigenous cultures around the world using pine needles, local plant materials, and for me, horse hair.

I love working with horse hair because the material is sensuous, strong, and allows me to create intricate and flowing forms.

*If you have a beloved horse that has passed please contact the artist. It has been my honor to weave horse hair vessels to memorialize this important relationship.
